In modern toothpaste formulations you can find the use of 'Baking Soda and Peroxide'. In such a formulation Peroxide is used as a bleaching agent whereas Baking Soda is considered as the cleaning body of the toothpaste.
IXPER® is preferred as the source of Peroxides for a number of reasons :
- There are almost no safety issues associated with the use of IXPER® .
- IXPER® is sparingly soluble in water, and as result the intrinsic stability at a pH of approximately 11.5 is very good.
- Formulations containing IXPER® products have excellent intrinsic stability due to the high intrinsic stability and low solubility of IXPER® products.
- By shifting the pH to lower values, H2O2 is released. This chemical reaction will take place in the oral cavity during brushing. Saliva is slightly acidic and can release the H2O2 from IXPER® in the dentifrice during brushing.
- IXPER® products develop Hydrogen Peroxide while brushing and can remove stains and tartar (e.g. from red wine or tea) by oxidation.
Dosing levels
IXPER® is not specifically mentioned in the guidelines for toothpaste formulations. A threshold can be inferred from the limit of 0.1% H2O2 for Germany and 0.25% for the USA.
A new limit of 3.4% is provided by the newly specified values for the EC.
Higher H2O2 concentrations present a certain amount of risk given the potential of penetration into the tooth. In the USA, corresponding formulations are on the market, but they may only be used under the supervision of a dentist.
